What is meningococcal disease?
caused by bacteria Neisseria Meningitidis
can result in
meningitis - infection of the brain lining
meningococcal septicemia - infection in the blood
Signs and Symptoms
These can appear from 2 days and within upto 10 days of infection:
high fever
purplish skin rash
vomiting and/or nausea
headache
stiff neck
drowsiness
photophobia
confusion
Causes and spread
caused by bacteria Neisseria Meningitidis, most commonly by these 5 subtypes A,B,C,Y W135.
spread by coming in close personal contact with an infected person or saliva or nasal or throat secretions.
Carriers unaware of having the disease and sharing their personal belongings with others.
Affected Groups
People living in areas or coming in contact with infected patients
People exposed to large public gathering where they may be a possibility of coming in contact with infected person
Travellers at more risk when going to areas with known cases.
Lifestyle Adaptations
Avoid sharing of personal belongings and utensils.
Wash and clean hands properly frequently.
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth before cleaning your hands.
Use vaccinations if possibility of exposure.
If vaccinations are not available, chemoprophylaxis should be the next alternative.
Practise proper hygiene when coughing or sneezing.
Dispose tissues and napkins properly after use.
Make use of clean handkerchief.
Treatment
Urgently visit your nearest health care provider if you suspect Meningococcal diseases.
Certain antibiotics can be used as prescribed by your doctor.
